PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Security was heightened at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth Friday. Guards are checking everyone's ID before they let anyone onto the hospital grounds. But a trip to the hospital is expected to be quicker by Saturday.
Deborah Kallgren, a spokesperson for Naval Medical Center Portsmouth tells WAVY.com they went to 4th protection BRAVO Thursday night in response to the shootings at the Fort Hood post in Texas. As of 10 a.m. Friday morning, Ms. Kallgren said they are in the process of returning to regular security levels and should be back to normal by Saturday, November 7.
Other military installations are also increasing their security effort.
A spokeswoman said the Marine Corps Base at Quantico, Va., is at "threat condition alpha".
1st Lt. Joy Crabaugh, Quantico's media officer, said the base is monitoring the situation at Fort Hood, and "pertinent" lines of communication were in place.
Crabaugh said the base is implementing appropriate measures to ensure the safety of the base and its Marine and civilian residents and employees.
A spokesperson for the Fort Eustis, Va. Army post told WAVY.com their base has not closed. People are still allowed in and out. They are being vigilant and are watching the situation at Ft. Hood, said Monica Miller Rodgers.
Rogers said their thoughts are with their fellow comrades, killed and injured in the rampage.
During a live interview with WAVY.com, she said the mood at Fort Eustis is 'somber'.
