Big 'E' readies for last deployment

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Aircraft carrier USS Enterprise ( CVN 65) leaves Naval Station Norfolk for the last time March 11 in its 22nd and last deployment in 51 years.

About 5,500 sailors will head out to sea March 11 from Naval Station Norfolk.

Enterprise Carrier Strike Group (ENT CSG) consists of USS Porter ( DDG 78), USS Nitze ( DDG 94) and USS James E. Williams ( DDG 95). These guided-missile destroyers will deploy March 12.

Also part of the CSG is guided-missile cruiser USS Vicksburg (CG 69) which will deploy from Naval Station Mayport, Fla. March 9.

USS Porter's deployment from Naval Station Norfolk on Monday will be its last from Norfolk as it is being moved to a new homeport of Rota, Spain .

USS Enterprise (referred to as Big "E") will be the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier decommissioned by the Navy. She will be deactivated and de-fueled at Newport News Shipbuilding next year.
