HAMPTON ROADS, Va. - Severe weather moved through parts of our viewing area late Wednesday evening. Since then, several reports of storm damage and power outages have come into our newsroom.
Newport News fire officials tell WAVY.com they responded to numerous weather related events overnight. Fire officials say they responded to 30 weather related calls, mostly in the area of Mercury Blvd. south, along both Jefferson Ave. and Warwick Blvd. Most of the incidents involved fallen trees, which caused damage to utility lines, homes and vehicles.
The Newport News Fire Department also responded to two fires related to the weather. Officials say a fire caused by lightning occurred at a home on 77th Street and a candle being used for lighting caused another fire on Jarvis Place. The home on 77th Street has since been declared uninhabitable and the home on Jarvis place has been condemned.
One adult was transported to the hospital due to possible smoke inhalation. No other injuries have been reported.
The Huntington Park Boat Ramp is also closed due to Virginia Power repair work in the area. It is anticipated that the Huntington Park Boat Ramp will be closed for a minimum of three days. The Huntington Park Beach is open for swimming but parking is extremely limited. For updates, please visit www.nnparks.com or call 926-1400.
VDOT reported several live power lines caused the James River Bridge to close for much of the evening. Those lanes have since been reopened.
The National Weather Service is reporting that at least seven power lines were downed on Aberdeen Road (check out the photos to the left of this story) and a tree fell on a truck in Hampton. Multiple trees were reported down In Isle of Wight.
Meanwhile, Dominion is reporting 1,360 customers without power as of 11:30 a.m.
