VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - WAVY.com is continuing its investigation into why dumpsters remain overflowing at a Virginia Beach apartment complex.
On July 1, WAVY.com reported on four dumpsters overflowing at Dove Landing North. Residents complained with no reaction from Dove Landing because the company had failed to pay the trash pickup bill. That's when residents contacted 10 On Your Side. Following our report, Waste Management picked up the trash on a promise Dove Landing would pay.
Dove Landing residents are now, once again, complaining about the smell and unsightly mess.
"It smells, and we've got a raccoon problem, so the raccoons rip up the trash," says Tachicqua Ward.
Ward's living room window is right above the overflowing dumpster. She says there's a refrigerator full of rotting food, and there's furniture piling up from a move out. Ward also says the trash problem has been that way for two weeks.
"I've complained. I complained two weeks ago, and you wait and wait and wait, nothing happens. And I pay way too much money to be sitting around this trash," Ward said.
Ward wants WAVY.com to get the trash picked up, so we went back to the Dove Landing Office on Pleasure House Road and confronted a supervisor identified as Caroline. She told us, "I have no comment and you need to go." She then ordered us out of the office.
WAVY.com called Virginia Beach Code Enforcement who responded so quickly, investigators got to the site before we returned from Pleasure House Road. Dove Landing's maintenance supervisor, Patrick, put his hand in front of our camera and said, "Kill that camera. Get off the property. Do not put me on camera. I'm contacting a lawyer."
WAVY.com backed off to a public sidewalk and then Waste Management showed up and emptied the trash dumpster. The quick response by Waste Management was due to the health concerns of residents.
Ward thanked 10 On Your Side, saying, "if it weren't for 10 On Your Side, the trash would be out here for another two weeks."
