VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Virginia Beach police spokesperson Adam Bernstein confirmed to WAVY.com that Officer Bryan Womble, the officer charged with driving drunk on June 20, was served at his home Wednesday with misdemeanor Hit and Run charges.
Officer Womble was arrested on June 20 after getting into a two car crash at 20th Street and Pacific Avenue at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. No one was hurt, but police arrested Womble for DUI. Records state Womble had a "strong alcohol odor" and "failed field tests" at the accident scene.
Bernstein said Hit and Run charges were withheld until the value of the damage was determined.
The Chesapeake special prosecutor determined the damage to the vehicle was not valued enough for the Hit and Run to be classified as a felony, Bernstein said.
Police say the new charge does not change the circumstances of Womble's case. He will face the the Hit and Run charge on the same day he faces the DUI charge, which is scheduled for July 27.
Womble remains on administrative duty.
Officer Bryan Womble is also the arresting officer in the DUI case of former NFL star Bruce Smith, who was convicted Thursday in a Virginia Beach court of Driving Under the Influence back in May.
