Hampton Roads traffic moving freely

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. - Traffic conditions throughout Hampton Roads seem to have smoothed out since Thursday's traffic nightmare.

As of 1 p.m. Friday, WAVY.com is glad to report that the CBBT is moving well in both directions; the HRBT is experiencing moderate volumes, with no delays; the Downtonw Tunnel is moving freely in both directions, as is the Midtown Tunnel; the MMMBT is experiencing moderate travel in both directions and the JRB seems to moving along just nicely.

Motorists traveling from the Southside to the Peninsula Thursday experienced some major delays. VDOT says a malfunctioning water main system caused ponding inside of the I-64 HRBT West tube early Friday morning, closing all traffic lanes westbound at 6:30 a.m. One lane of traffic was opened at 2:15 p.m.

VDOT tells WAVY.com crews have successfully removed the water from the tube and at 7:38 p.m., both lanes of tunnel had been re-opened.

Officials say crews will return Friday evening from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. for additional work on the tube. Motorists should expect additional delays and seek alternate routes.

After the pump house and water main system drainage is complete, crews will be able to assess the damage to the system and make necessary repairs, VDOT officials tell WAVY.com. This may require additional nighttime lane closures next week.
