NORFOLK, Va. - A makeover's in progress. If you've driven down Waterside Drive
in Norfolk lately, you've seen the dirt pile fenced off at Town
Point Park. In just a few months, the site will be transformed into
the entertainment hub of downtown Norfolk.
With just six months to go before the re-opening of Town
Point Park, workers are busy laying bricks and digging
trenches.
The park is far from completed, with major changes expected, like a water park for children, new landscaping and fountains, as well as new Amphitheater.
Since 1984, the park has been the heart of downtown Norfolk's celebrations and after 25 years the city has finally agreed to give it a face lift.
"It was old, in fact the trees were diseased and there was some maintenance issues with trying to keep the grass up in good shape...it's given us the opportunity to rebuild the whole infrastructure."
All that work is expected to cost close to $11.5-million in city funds, the port authority and a public partnership with Festevents.
"This is were the public has the opportunity to participate. They can buy bricks, they can buy park benches...,"
With future plans of renovating Waterside and other projects throughout the city, city officials are still saying, "It's going to be opened on time. There is a commitment it gets open Fourth of July weekend because you cant have summer without Harborfest."

City officials hope to have the park open by July 3rd, for
the big annual Harborfest celebration.
