Hampton's 'Shred-it' event

HAMPTON, Va. - 10 On Your Side's Tom Schaad and producer Kelly Welsh are out at the Shred-it event in Hampton.

Winding down now. It's been a great day! Thanks to BayPort Credit Union, ARMA, the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia, the boy and girl scout volunteers and especially the crews from Shred-it!

The team shredded over 16,000 lbs of documents! And our viewers donated an estimated 2,500 lbs of food.

Hi this is Kelly Welsh for WAVY.com

I'm here in Hampton and thank goodness it's not raining! The sun is actually peaking through the clouds.

Dozens of people showed up this morning to shred their unwanted documents at the Baypoint Credit Union. Representatives from Arma were on hand to help inform people how long they should keep old records and help prevent identity theft.

Our own Tom Shaad is meeting viewers, signing autographs and helping them carry boxes full of documents to be shredded.

The Foodbank is here collecting canned goods for those in need in Hampton Roads. So far, one gigantic box is completely full and overflowing. The boys and girls scouts are helping out too. One viewer told us, "I didn't know I had that much stuff!"

Everyone seems to be pretty excited to get rid of their old documents and don't mind waiting in line.

And, Connell and Justin from Shred-it are doing a fantastic job shredding tons of unwanted paperwork.

All around it's been a great day!
