PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Portsmouth police believe a single man is behind at least eight robberies, from a bank to a Wawa.
The crime spree started on Oct. 11, Portsmouth police spokeswoman Jan Westerbeck said in a statement, when a man robbed the Wachovia Bank at 5700 Portsmouth Blvd. The man passed a note and indicated he had a gun.
Later that same day, a suspect believed to be the same man, robbed the Dunkin Donuts at 4701 George Washington Highway. He fought with an employee over the cash drawer and escaped with an undetermined amount of cash.
Later yet that same day, the same man is believed to have robbed the Kangaroo Express at 1001 N. George Washington Highway in Chesapeake.
Police suspect the man in these additional robberies:
-- Wawa, 4005 Victory Blvd., Portsmouth, Oct. 25
-- Bank of Hampton Roads, 852 N. George Washington Highway, Chesapeake, Oct. 27
-- Kangaroo Express, 1001 N. George Washington Highway, Chesapeake, Oct. 27
-- Texaco, 1256 N. George Washington Highway, Chesapeake, Oct. 29
-- A credit union in Henrico County, Oct. 30
The suspect is described as a black man between 40 and 50, five feet nine inches to six feet tall, 175 and 180 pounds. Police said he wears black sunglasses and a blue/red baseball cap with the letter "A" on the front.
