OUTER BANKS, NC - A wild Mustang, known as Spec, was killed on Corolla Beach in the Outer Banks, North Carolina. An investigation showed the horse may have been killed by an ATV.
Corolla Wild Horse Fund Executive Director Karen H. McCalpin told WAVY.com that police have since made an arrest in the case.
Kendra K. James, 21, of Chesapeake, was arrested and charged with Failure to Report Injuring a Wild Horse on Friday -- a county ordinance violation which carries a maximum fine of $500.00.
James admitted to an investigator, that she had accidentally struck a wild horse with her Jeep Cherokee on March 28th, 2009 -- claiming the beach was foggy.
James told the investigator she was traveling north at approximately 20-25 mph when a herd of wild horses ran out in front of her vehicle. James stated that she tried to turn to avoid the wild horse, but couldn't due to the deep ruts in the soft sand.
James said she didn't know who to call, or that she was required to file a report.
Another horse was killed in the Outer Banks back in April. That case remains unsolved. Anyone with information is urged to call the Currituck Sheriff's Dept. at 252-232-2216.
If you happen to accidentally hit a horse on the Outer Banks, call the police.
