NORFOLK, Va. - Police are investigating a homicide that occurred around 1 a.m. at the intersection of 34th Street and Colonial Avenue in the Park Place neighborhood.

Officers responded to gunshots heard in the area and found 18-year-old Charles Humphrey lying on the ground. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Humphrey is the sixth high school athlete killed in Hampton Roads in the last ten months. He played football at Maury High School in Norfolk, and was named All-Eastern District: First Team Offense.

His football coach, John Quinerly, said, "Everybody in the school and in the community just loved him and that's why all these kids and people that taught him and his coaches from the past are out here at the scene of his murder."

On Monday, there will be a 5 p.m. memorial service for Humphrey at the Urban Community Church of Norfolk.
