Letter to WAVY.com from SEVA GRREAT Executive Director Laura Spink:
We are a non-profit volunteer run 501 (c)(3) organization dedicated to finding forever homes for unwanted and abandoned golden retrievers.
Usually we take in about 10 dogs a month and have about 20 – 30 dogs in our system at any point in time. We get about half of our dogs from animal shelters and about half from owner-turn ins. Many of these are special needs dogs that are not likely to be adopted but will always have a loving home with us (see our website for some of these special dogs).
Last year we rescued a record 105 dogs and it was the first year since we incorporated in 1990 to exceed 100 dogs. In 2006 and 2007 we rescued about 70-80 dogs each year.
With the rapid influx of Isle of Wight dogs, we currently have over 60 dogs in our system which has stretched our resources (people and funds) to its limits.
I know that WAVY viewers will want to help. 91% of our expenses ($72,400) in 2008 was spent on medical attention for our dogs – which is about $700 per dog on average. In order to meet the needs of this huge unexpected influx of medically needy dogs, we need financial donations most of all. Any donated amount makes a difference and all donations are tax deductible.
Donations can be made via our website at www.adoptagolden.com or mailed to our P.O. Box 8014, Yorktown VA 23693. All donations will go directly to help these dogs regain their health and restore their loving and trusting spirit.
Thank your for your support. We all make a difference.
Regards,
Laura Spink
