HAMPTON, Va. - As the first chords kicked off the Hampton Jazz Festival, the crowd erupted in applause.

In a way, the music lovers that had so recently been mourning Michael Jackson's death were now celebrating his life.

"I like his moves, his steps. I like his singing," laughed Doris Alexandra.

Jackson's music spanned generations. From his first records on vinyl to his latest hits on mp3, his music created legions of fans and ensured his work a place in music history.

"Even on my iPod, I have many of his songs and albums," said Alex Ebanks, "so it's actually a great loss that he passed yesterday."

Jackson's success went beyond his own genre. He influenced music as

much as he did pop culture, becoming an icon internationally. Here

at the Jazz Festival, fans remember what he meant to them. Fern

Ebanks saw him in concert once.

"Awesome, awesome experience," remembered Ebanks. "A lot of energy. It was just great."

Jackson's four-decade music career won him thirteen Grammy's and thirteen number one solo hits. From his days as a child star with the Jackson 5 to international success as a solo artist, he leaves behind a legacy as one of the world's greatest entertainers.
