HAMPTON, Va. - Early Sunday morning, Police say a former Hampton University student followed a pizza delivery man into his old dormitory and started shooting. The gunman hit the driver and a dorm manager, before shooting himself.
Tom McCall's wife says he's delivered to Hampton University a hundred times before. He never imagined what anything like this would happen.
"I don't feel lucky, I feel blessed," said Danielle McCall. "I am blessed beyond reason that my husband is still alive."
Danielle McCall was at home asleep early Sunday morning when the phone started ringing.
"You don't expect to at 2:30 in the morning someone telling you that your husband has been shot," added McCall.
Her husband, Tom was delivering a pizza to Harkness Hall at Hampton University. Police say he and a dorm manager were shot in the lobby by a former student.
"He heard somebody behind him, he turned and the next thing he remembers is wondering why it was so smokey," said McCall.
Danielle says Tom was shot in face and chest. One of the bullets also pierced his hand.
"He had raised his hand to block the bullet and it went in his hand and then went into his chest," added McCall.
Doctors told the family the bullet just barley missed his heart.
"He should be in heaven right now...," said McCall.
Danielle and Tom married nine years ago.
"It was really hard seeing how close that bullet was to his heart and knowing that I was that close to losing him," added McCall.
She believes her husband was sent to the lobby by God. He was there to protect all students.
"Miracles happen everyday," said McCall. "People may not want to hear that, but miracles happen everyday and my husband is proof that a miracle just happened this past Sunday morning."
Danielle says Tom is out of the woods. He is up and moving around. He could be released from the hospital as early as Sunday. She tells us her husband is a chemist who was laid off in February. He started delivering pizzas just to make ends meet.
