CHESAPEAKE, Va. - A former Chesapeake police officer has been charged with petty larceny after allegedly stealing almost 26,000 rounds of ammunition from the police department, officials said.

Charles Glen Adams resigned from the Chesapeake Police Department in the midst of an investigation into stolen ammution. Chesapeake police officials said Adams was charged with petty larceny on Monday. He surrendered to police Monday and is now free pending trial.

Police raided a home at 2540 Alleghany Loop in Virginia Beach on Oct. 10 and found 25,700 rounds of ammunition, as well as night-vision goggles and other police equipment, according to court documents obtained by WAVY.com.

"They are rounds that do belong to the Chesapeake Police Department," spokeswoman Dorienne Boykin said.

Some rounds were marked as for police use only, and others were marked as property of the Chesapeake Police Department, according to a search warrant filed in the case.

Adams does not live at the Alleghany Loop address, police said.  The house belongs to another Chesapeake Police officer.  That officer, who has not been identified, is on administrative leave pending an internal affairs investigation.

The Chesapeake Police Department is remaining tight-lipped about this case.  The department sent this statement to WAVY.com;

"We are unable to comment on any matters regarding the case at this time.  There is still an internal investigation going on that Mr. Adams was linked to.  Also, commenting  might hinder Mr. Adams from receiving a fair trial in his pending Petit Larceny case."
