UNDATED, Va. - Riverdale Elementary School's Superintendent released the following statment regarding the accident:

On Friday, January 9, 2009, we had a tragic bus accident to occur at Riverdale Elementary School in which a pre-kindergarten child was struck and fatally injured by a school bus. Parents were notified via instant alert notification system of the accident and informed that they could pick up their child(ren) if desired. Crisis counselors and central office staff were present on site throughout the day. The Sheriff’s Department, to whom we are grateful, did an outstanding job. We were also supported in an outstanding manner by the Hunterdale Fire and Rescue team of which we are also grateful. We owe a great amount of gratitude to the staff of Riverdale and parents who cooperated with us in this difficult time in an outstanding manner. The matter is still under investigation. Crisis counselors returned to Riverdale Elementary today and will continue their presence on site as long as needed.

The entire Southampton County Public School System would like to keep the family in their thoughts and prayers.
