Schools dismissed late due to lockdown

YORK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) - Several schools in York County let out 30 minutes late due to a lockdown placed because of an police investigation near the schools.

Lt. Dennis Ivey with the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office told WAVY.com a car was driving down Goosely Road in York County near Yorktown Middle School when one of its windows was shattered shortly before 1:30 p.m. Ivey says a suspicious man carrying a handgun was seen in the area near the woods close to Yorktown Middle School.

At that point, Yorktown Middle, Yorktown High and Yorktown Elementary schools were placed on lockdown.

Ivey says deputies searched the area of the schools, worked the car as a crime scene and looked for the man carrying a handgun. Further investigation proved that the man deputies were looking for was the driver of the car whose window was broken and was not carrying a handgun, according to Ivey.

Ivey says it was never determined what caused the window to break.

The schools were taken off lockdown around 2:30 p.m. Because of the delay, school buses were running 30 minutes behind as well.
