Husband, wife flew in from Pa. to visit relatives

RAISIN TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Two people en route from Pennsylvania died late Friday afternoon in a single-engine aircraft crash north of Adrian, Mich., the Lenawee County Sheriff said.

The aircraft reportedly crashed shortly after 4:30 p.m. in the vicinity of Raisin Township, about two miles north of Adrian.

Lenawee County Sheriff's deputies, Adrian police and fire, Rains Township fire, and Michigan State Police combed the area around the crash site to see if anyone else has been injured. The plane lost altitude and crashed into a clearing near Heritage Park.

It is unclear what model of aircraft crashed. Officials said when emergency crews arrived the aircraft was engulfed in flames.

WJBK FOX Detroit / myFOXDetroit.com said that victims were found near the crash site. The sheriff's department said the couple was flying into Adrian to visit relatives.

North Adrian Highway and Valley Road were shut down to all traffic for several hours immediately following the crash.

The crash site is located near M-52, about four miles northeast of the city of Adrian.

There are four regional airports near where the aircraft was last seen - Lenawee County Airport south of Adrian, Merillat Airport south of Tecumseh, Meyers-Diver's Airport north of Tecumseh, and Honey Acres Airport west of Clinton.

The sheriff's department contacted the four regional airports to see what the aircraft's flight plan was.

Federal Aviation Administration officials from Chicago have been dispatched to the crash site. THe National Transportation and Safety Board took over the investigation on Saturday.

The victims were from Colorado but flew in from Scranton, Pa., to see relatives, the sheriff's department said Saturday.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
