DARE, N.C. (WAVY) - A North Carolina Department of Transportation worker was killed in an accident in a work zone on North Carolina Highway 12 early Sunday morning.

The accident happened around 1 a.m. Sunday morning when a NCDOT dump truck struck the rear of another NCDOT dump truck that had broken down, according to a spokesman for the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

The driver of the truck was killed on impact and has been identified as Michael Stevenson, 36, of Hertford, N.C.

The driver of the truck that broke down, Ronnie Anderson, 45, of Sunbury, N.C., was flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The accident occurred about three miles south of the Bonner Bridge, in an area where crews were working to remove sand brought by Hurricane Sandy and the recent Nor'Easter, according to a press release for the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

No other details have been released.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol and NCDOT are investigating the accident.
