NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - In a change of command ceremony Friday, Capt. Sara Joyner became the commander of Carrier Air Wing 3, relieving Capt. Michael Wallace at NAS Oceana.
According to Commander Phil Rosi, Joyner graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1989. She led Strike Fighter Squadron 105 on a combat cruise in 2007 to the Arabian Gulf during "Operation Iraqi Freedom."
"I've always been at the forefront of how these things are rolling through the Navy and I don't know any differently," Joyner said Friday. "I have a huge responsibility and it's very sobering to think about being CAG but as far as being the first female CAG that's not, there's nothing changing. I look out the same set of eyes and I don't see things differently because I'm a female."
Wallace has commanded CVW 3 since February 2010. His next assignment is to commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic as chief of staff.
