WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (WAVY) - The College of William and Mary revealed its new mascot Tuesday evening: Griffin
After a 16-month search, and controversy surrounding its former mascot, the College of William and Mary welcomed Griffin to the Tribe.
In 2006, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) ruled that the use of the word "Tribe" was fine, but decided that William and Mary's feathered logo could be considered offensive to Native Americans and had to go. The college appealed the NCAA decision, but that appeal was denied.
Hundreds of ideas for a new mascot were submitted, and several finalists were selected.
The top five selected mascot finalists were: the Griffin, King and Queen, Phoenix, Pug and Wren.
Out of 283 votes in a WAVY.com poll, the King and Queen won with 26 percent of the vote.
