Parents are furious

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - Students describe their terrifying ordeal as another student entered Wilson High School's crowded cafeteria and started shooting.

"He was smiling just looked up into the air and shot it once, and kept walking, then pulled back and shot it again"  recalled Tevin Patterson.

"I just head a lot of screaming," Angelica Coltrane said, "and everybody ran out"

Derrick Archer said it was pure chaos, "I just made sure I got out"

It was every man for himself, they say.

Coltrane said no one took charge, "At the time it was just only one coach in the cafeteria and when I looked up he was gone."

Frantic parents raced to the scene, furious with school administrators.

"They didn't call [nobody's] parents, the school called no parents, we found out through children calling us on cell phones," said parent Tamesha Copeland.

Once on site they met more confusion.

Mother Tayna Williams asked "Who was addressing us to calm us down and let us know it was under control?"

Tanya Williams said the man on the megaphone only shouted orders. These parents wanted answers.

Mattalyn Spade said her daughter won't be back tomorrow, "...not until somebody gives me an answer to where is the security for our kids."

When it comes to security checks, they are demanding change--the one thing student Tevin Patterson no longer fears.

"I used to think it was not cool to get checked but after this, it's very cool to get checked," he said.
