NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Newport News police say a 17-year-old female was shot sometime late Tuesday night. She's currently listed in critical condition at a local hospital.

The teen was an 11th grader at Heritage High School.

A police spokesperson told WAVY.com officers arrived in the 4500 block of Orcutt Avenue at around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday. The teen was found inside an apartment shot in the upper body.

Emergency crews rushed her to a nearby hospital.

"You never know when we walk outside it could be one of us." That's what neighbor Jerry Ruffin told WAVY.com after seeing an ambulance and police cars off Orcutt Avenue responding to the shooting. Another neighbor who didn't want her identity given said, "It's shocking to me. I live right here and didn't hear nothing." She said she's ready to move.

Police are still looking for a suspect and have made no arrests in the case.

Police say they were interviewing at least two other people who were inside the home at the time.
