NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - Two weeks of fluctuating temperatures, rain and snow have left their mark on the roads in and around Hampton Roads. From the Berkley Bridge to the I-64 interchange, potholes litter the stretch of road along I-264. Drivers are concerned over the wear and tear it's causing their cars.

"I make my commute from Virginia Beach every morning and it's just inevitable, we always hit potholes," said Marie Murphy.

Jerome Ball of Norfolk told WAVY.com, "I'm in need of a front end alignment right now and I'm not the only one. Quite a lot of people are going to need alignments after this season."

VDOT says it is the unusual climate that's to blame. "With the weather conditions that we've had recently -- they've been extreme -- we've had an abundance of potholes popping up," VDOT spokesperson Lauren Hansen told WAVY.com.

Drivers want to know what's being done to fix the potholes.

"They fill it then it comes back so I think probably just repairing the road would be better," said Caleb Wbnani.

Hansen says there's a reason the potholes keep popping up. "We're stuck with using a cold mix asphalt, which provides a temporary fix for the driving conditions but will eventually pop out and have to be re-patched... until we can get that permanent patch down."

Meanwhile, drivers are left with a bumpy commute that only worsens with winter's wrath.

Hansen says if you see a pothole along a major interstate or highway and you want to make VDOT aware of it, you can call them at 1-367-ROAD.

In Norfolk, a 24-hour hotline has been set up to report potholes and broken sidewalks in the city. Call 823-4050 to report potholes or broken sidewalks. You may also e-mail reports to PWorks@norfolk.gov .

There's also a convenient online form at www.norfolk.gov/PublicWorks/pothole.asp if you'd like to submit a report that way.
