HAMPTON ROADS, Va. - The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is preparing for a wintry mix of snow and sleet throughout the region with the greatest impact felt in the western part of Hampton Roads.
Salt, sand and anti-icing trucks are standing ready to treat roadways throughout the area. Crews have been mobilized from the Franklin Area Headquarters and have been pre-treating Routes 58 and 460 throughout the day. Crews in other parts of the region are on stand-by with 24-hour operations beginning Saturday, December 19.
VDOT urges motorists to drive slowly, keep a safe distance between vehicles, be aware that bridges and elevated roadways freeze first, and unless necessary, stay off the highways.
Southhampton County and Franklin have seen minor snow accumulations as of 11:00 p.m. Friday night with heavier snow falling to the west and north.
