HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) - Virginia Department of Transportation crews are preparing for Hurricane Earl by making sure that the roadways are safe for travel.
The agency began preparing for potential hurricane conditions in May, in advance of the onset of hurricane season.
VDOT test the tide gates at both the Midtown Tunnel and Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel twice a year as part of its preventative measures. VDOT is testing the Midtown Tunnel this week, and last tested the HRBT tunnel in June 2010.
VDOT said their primary role before, during, and after a hurricane is to ensure that the roadways are safe for travel. Their other responsibilities include setting up traffic control and detour,s removing debris and branches from roadways, making emergency repairs, providing emergency plans and procedures, and communicating road condition information to the public.
