VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - The St. Patrick's Day, the Virginia Beach Police Department conducted traffic safety checkpoints and issued a total of 188 summonses.
Of those 188, nine were DUI arrests; 48 were seat belt violations; two were child seat violations; six were for driving on a suspended license; three were for driving with no license; 36 were issued for speeding and 83 were issued for "other" offenses.
Virginia Beach police charged 2,454 individuals with DUI in 2009.
Beach police say there were 22 fatal crashes in Virginia Beach in 2009 -- half of them involved alcohol or drugs.
