VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Hampton Roads Transit is one step closer to helping Virginia Beach eventually get light rail.
On Friday morning, the Operations and Oversight Committee agreed to move forward with a $5 million payment to help buy the Norfolk Southern right-of-way in Virginia Beach.
The HRT money will ensure the city is prepared for light rail or rapid bus transit in the future, according to Virginia Beach Council member John Uhrin.
"We're certainly making a commitment to maintaining a future transit corridor right through the center of the city. That's a commitment we've had - not just this council - other councils before, so we're just really protecting that," said Uhrin.
The committee also agreed to move the issue to a full vote later this month. If approved, HRT would pay Norfolk-Southern $1 million per year for the next five years.
