VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Virginia Beach City Council approved to extend high school days by 15 minutes during a meeting Tuesday.

The new schedule will allow students taking advanced classes to enjoy a longer, 30-minute lunch break. The previous schedule did not leave much room for a break during the afternoon for those students.

According to Virginia Beach City Public Schools, the following will be starting and ending times for the 2013-2014 school year:

  • High schools 7:20 a.m. to 2:10 p.m.
  • Middle schools 9:20 a.m. to 3:50 p.m.
  • “A” elementary schools 8:10 a.m. to 2:40 p.m.
  • “B” elementary schools 8:40 a.m. to 3:10 p.m.

Elementary and middle schools will not be lengthening their days, but will adjust to accommodate new high school hours.

Another addition are a limited number of core classes being offered semester-long for credit recovery.
