VB schools to consider security changes

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Virginia Beach school officials are exploring additional security options to better protect students following last month's deadly school shooting in Connecticut.

This week, the school system had extra police officers at elementary and middle schools. Officers also conducted random school visits to check on security.

"I felt better and relieved that they are planning something to protect our children in this time," parent Angela Day said. "There is always the worry of copycats."

Although the extra security will be around for the rest of the week, it has left many parents with questions about the future.

"This is a wonderful way to alleviate our fears short time but our concern is also on the long-term. The question is what are they going to do a year from now," Day said.

"Are the resources there to do it (increased security) for the long term? I don't know. That's up to the city. I do think if it makes our children safer that's got to be a priority," parent Mike Wauhop said.

10 On Your Side obtained school documents that state administrators are looking at security improvements. The details were not available.

This month, police will be meeting with school staff to look over security changes, especially those that require money.

Newport News Public Schools will also have extra police presence at their elementary schools throughout the rest of the school year. Isle of Wight County School are also keeping their heightened security at elementary schools until otherwise noted.
