VB school officials want public's input

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Virginia Beach School officials want to hear what residents think about their proposed schedule change for high school students.

There will be a public hearing at Tuesday's school board meeting at 6 p.m.

Here are some of the proposed changes:

  • The new schedule would increase the length of the school day for students by 15 minutes.  The added 15 minutes would mean a new start time for elementary and middle school students.
  • High school students would take 6 to 8 classes with a daily lunch block.
  • Specific 4x4 core courses would be added to help if students are having trouble passing a class.
  • Teachers would get a 90 minute daily planning block.

You can take a look at more of the proposed changes on the Virginia Beach City Public Schools' website .

Virginia Beach school officials say this hybrid high school schedule was developed because of new state mandated graduation requirements.  Also, because the school system wants to give students a chance to recover credits, take electives or earn certifications.

Residents can offer their thoughts about this proposed schedule at Tuesday's school board meeting that starts at 6 p.m.  The school board is expected to vote on this schedule on Dec. 4.
