VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - The Virginia Beach convention center hotel deal is officially dead.
City council voted to terminate the agreement with Armada Hoffler, which allows them to seek other bids.
One of those bids would come from the owners of the Doubletree by Hilton, located next to the Convention Center. The proposal involves constructing an indoor connector from the hotel to the convention center.
Virginia Beach Councilman Bill DeSteph told WAVY.com the Doubletree by Hilton plan makes the most sense because convention center hotels are not doing well across the country.
"They are doing a great job upgrading the hotel. They are reskinning the hotel, they are going to put another tower up and all with their money. The only thing they have asked us to do is to provide a connector between the two, " DeSteph explained.
That indoor connector would cost between $5 and $10 million.
Calls to Doubletree by Hilton representatives were not returned.
