Va. Aquarium: Seals are dangerous

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - After beached seals were spotted at the Oceanfront several times during the past week, members of the Virginia Aquarium are reminding residents they are dangerous animals.

Christina Trapani, a stranding information specialist with the Aquarium said seal sightings have increased in Virginia Beach.

"In the last 10 or 12 years, it's come to be kind of more common, to see them in this area and North Carolina as well," Trapani said.

During the past week, a seal was found near the Chesapeake Bridge-Bay Tunnel with a gill net wrapped around his neck. Monday night, a seal washed ashore between 7th and 8th Streets at the Oceanfront.

Unlike most marine animals, seals don't need to be dying to make land.

"They're wild animals, so they can easily become aggressive especially if they feel threatened, so it's really important to understand that they are wild animals.. very cute, wild animals," Trapani said.

If you do see a seal washed ashore, be sure to contact the Aquarium's stranding team at 757- 385-7575.
