Suspect arrested for Va Beach shooting

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Virginia Beach police say the suspect in a Tuesday night shooting near Lincoln Military Housing turned himself in Wednesday.

Police say James W. Hawkins, Jr., of the 600 block of Cooperstown Court, faces a long list of charges including aggravated malicious wounding, use of a firearm, abduction and kidnapping and violation of a protective order.

Police say Hawkins shot the victim in the 1200 block of Birdneck Road just after 6 p.m. Tuesday night.

Jimmy Barnes of the Virginia Beach Police Department says the victim was a friend of a woman in a domestic situation. According to Barnes, Hawkins confronted the victim and shot him.

Two men heard the gunshots and ran to help.

Joshua Morin and Christopher Dockery were sitting on their front porch in the military housing neighborhood at the time of the shooting. They ran toward the gate to the neighborhood and found the victim lying on his hands and knees.

"His head was actually on the curb and blood was running down from his arm to the curb," said Dockery.

The two men counted five gunshot wounds on the victim. They say he was shot from the front and from the back and one bullet traveled through his back and out his stomach.

"You could see that it was an exit wound," said Morin. "Every time he was gasping for air, blood would shoot out of it."

Dockery says the victim's mother handed him the phone to call 911 as he was trying to stop the bleeding with towels. He also says one man took off his shirt to help with the bleeding.

The two added a pizza delivery driver witnessed the shooting and told them what he saw.

"It was a guy in a green truck that had gotten out of the truck and walked up to him," said Dockery.  "And he just started opening fire on him."

Barnes says the victim is in stable but critical condition. Police have not released his name.
