4 shot at Sandbridge house party

Police: Fight breaks out at rental home

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Virginia Beach police arrested one man and are searching for others in connection with a quadruple shooting in Sandbridge.

The first 911 call came in at 2:17 a.m. Sunday, according to VBPD spokesperson Sgt. Brian Ricardo.

Officers responded to the 3500 block of Sandfiddler Road to find a total of four victims in front of the house and further down the road. Police believe a fight broke out during a party inside a rental home.

Police say the call came from Sandfiddler Road where the house is located, but the party and fight spilled over onto Sandpiper Road.

Jimmy Barnes with Virginia Beach Police Department says the only call they received for this address was to report the shooting, and that there were no other previous complaints.

Neighbors say there were between 50 and 70 people at the house labeled " Spindrift ." One woman says the fight broke out on the front lawn around 2 a.m. when the party was ending.

According to a Sandbridge Realty representative, a woman rented the home for her child's birthday. She told him the shooting victims were not invited to the party.

"Right where those pine trees are, I saw a scuffle, two guys fighting," said Irene Croushorn, who is renting the home next door with some friends. "I looked out the window and he was shooting like 'Bam! Bam! Bam!'"

Police said one of the victims was hit in the head, another in the foot, and a third in the back. The fourth victim was shot in the hand. Two of the victims were released with minor injuries; the other two remain in the hospital in stable condition, police said.

"It was kind of like being in a movie," said Jessica Dolenuck, a year-round resident who lives next to the Spindrift. "We saw two cars pull up, one on each side of the road, and there was probably like 15 rounds of gunshots and a man laying in the street."

"It's a rarity to see that, especially down here in Sandbridge," said Rob McNabb, who lives nearby. "It's a tight community and we don't want any part of that around here."

Police arrested 22-year-old Jaquan Phillips of Newport News. He faces three counts of attempted malicious assault and three counts use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Police say his arrest was for a separate firearms violation of shooting at a vehicle leaving the 3500 block of Sandpiper Road Sunday morning.

Police are still looking for several other possible suspects. Call 1-888-LOCK-U-UP if you have any information that could lead to an arrest.
