Police seek manslaughter defendant

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Police in Virginia Beach need your help in locating a man convicted in a crash that killed his friend.

On March 1, a jury found Cameron Paul Crockett, 23, guilty of involuntary manslaughter and recommended a prison sentence of five years.

The sentencing phase of the trial was set to begin Monday, but Crockett never showed up. He was then indicted for felony failure to appear.

In Dec. 2008, Crockett was behind the wheel when he hit a tree on Wolfsnare Road. His friend, John "Jack" Korte, was a passenger in the car and died at the scene.

Both alcohol and speed were factors in the accident.

Crockett was charged with aggravated involuntary manslaughter, DUI and driving without a license. He was found guilty of the charges last year, but the jury could not agree on a sentence, resulting in a mistrial.

In Virginia, a recently passed bill allows for a new jury to be brought in for sentencing if the previous jury deadlocked on the decision.
