VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - The Virginia Beach Police Department and Medical Examiner’s Office is investigating a set of human skeletal remains found in a wooded area Wednesday.
Grazia Moyers with the Virginia Beach Police Department said a set of bones was discovered by two people as they were walking in a wooded area in the 4500 block of Bonney Road. The discovery was made around 2:30 p.m.
When police arrived on scene, they found the bones on a vacant lot near a marsh, Moyers said. The bones do look as though they have been in the area for some time.
The Medical Examiner’s Office was contacted and an anthropologist as well as a pathologist arrived on scene Wednesday.
The bones were determined to be human Thursday afternoon.
"It's almost a waiting game at this point. Once we get the identity of the victim we'll start looking into missing persons cases and things like that," Moyers said.
In the meantime, investigators will process evidence they found near the remains in hopes of shedding light on who this person was.
"We're looking for any type of clothes, any personal property. I've personally gone to crime scenes looked at
cigarette butts trying to identify who may be the bad guy who at this point we're trying to identify who the victim is," Moyers said.
Neighbors tell WAVY.com they think the remains could be of a homeless person.
