VIRGINIA BEACH. Va. (WAVY) - Police continue to work a bizarre death investigation in Virginia Beach.
It started at 1:20 Saturday morning on Bobb Lane near Southern Boulevard when an officer working DUI enforcement pulled over a driver.
Police spokesman Sgt. Brian Ricardo said the man behind the wheel took off running into a nearby field. The pursuing officer lost sight of him, and K-9 units had to be brought in to help track him down.
About an hour later, a K-9 unit found a person lying on a porch a few blocks from the traffic stop. Police said the man was struggling to breathe when officers found him.
Rescue crews arrived and pronounced him dead at the scene.
Ricardo said the deceased man was a 48-year-old Virginia Beach resident, but he was not releasing his name until detectives could determine if he was associated with the vehicle. The vehicle was registered to a Virginia Beach woman, and the man was not believed to be a resident of the neighborhood, he said.
The cause of the man's death remains unknown. His body had no signs of trauma and was taken to the Medical Examiner's Office in Norfolk for an autopsy.
