VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Police say the death of a Pit Bull left outside a shelter overnight was not criminal.
A volunteer with the Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center found the dog in an outdoor play area two weeks ago. Police said the dog was left outside overnight during frigid temperatures but had also suffered several medical issues, including heart and lung disease.
Grazia Moyers with the Virginia Beach Police Department said a criminal investigation with the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office revealed there was no criminal intent in the incident and that a shelter employee had simply forgotten to return the dog back inside that evening.
Moyers said an internal investigation is ongoing.
