VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - It's been one week since a Navy F/A-18D jet crashed into an apartment complex in Virginia Beach.
It began with the familiar sound of jet noise but ended with an unfamiliar scene.
"It wasn't so much of a seeing, it was more of a hearing," said one woman.
Two pilots safely ejected from the jet just before it crashed into Mayfair Mews Apartments.
Pat Kavanaugh attended to one of the pilots.
"Saw a pilot laying on the ground, his parachute still connected to the building. I ran over and did a body survey to see about his injuries," said Kavanaugh.
Many others heard his heartfelt apology.
"He said, 'I'm sorry I destroyed your home'," one woman recalled.
