Officer-involved interstate crash

I-264 at Lynnhaven Parkway

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Virginia Beach Police are investigating an interstate crash involving one of their officers.

According to Grazia Moyers with the Virginia state Police, 27-year-old John Paul Kotara hit the officer and his cruiser before flipping over a guardrail around 10:40 p.m. Friday.

The officer was conducting a traffic stop at the time near the Lynnhaven Parkway exit of Interstate 264 East.

The officer and Kotara were the only two hurt. They suffered minor injuries and were released from the hospital.

Kotara was charged with DUI and violation of the "move over" law.

He is currently being held at the Virginia Beach Correctional Center on a secured bond.
