Navy begins jet crash compensation

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Residents of the Mayfair Mews Apartments are receiving immediate compensation from the Navy Monday morning following the F/ A-18D jet crash.

The Navy is paying for residents to stay in hotels for the next two weeks and the government is depositing money into their bank accounts to help them as they deal with finding a new place to stay.

Monday morning at 10 a.m., officials will handout the initial disbursement of those funds at the Law Enforcement Training Center located at 411 Integrity Way in Virginia Beach.

City officials, Navy personnel and affected residents gathered at the Virginia Beach Law Enforcement Training Academy Saturday for a meeting about insurance claims.

Mayor Will Sessoms said Saturday the quickest way for people to get help is to file through their personal insurance plans. The Navy will then reimburse the citizens through federal claims forms.

Residents then had limited access to the safe areas of the apartment complex Sunday to retrieve their belongings and were allowed to pick up their vehicles at the Virginia Beach Convention Center Monday morning.

If their drivers license or car title were inside their homes during the fire Friday, a mobile DMV unit will be on site to help, as well as a mobile key molder for those who left their keys inside the apartment.
