VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Three homes in the Ridley Manor neighborhood of Virginia Beach were destroyed by a massive two-alarm fire Thursday.
The fire started in a home and spread to the other two next door. One witness said he heard explosions as if ammunition was going off inside the house.
Kim Mathers saw the smoke from the first house and was hoping the fire wouldn't reach hers. It soon spread to the home she was in, which is owned by her mother.
"You just start to think I could [have] grabbed something, I didn't think it would catch on fire," she said. Mathers called her mother Patricia Kaplan.
"I was screaming and crying," Kaplan said. "I was hysterical and now I'm numb. I cant believe it. I'm going to wake up tomorrow [saying] this didn't happen to me."
Firefighters said they were on the scene five minutes after they got the call, but it was already out of control.
