VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - A 70-year-old man nearly drowned Sunday morning at the Virginia Beach oceanfront.
Bruce Nedelka with Virginia Beach Emergency Medical Services told WAVY.com witnesses saw the man with a group of four or five people shortly before 10 a.m., when they began to struggle in the water. Witnesses on shore went to assist the man but could not bring him back to land.
A local surfer who was nearby saw the commotion and paddled over to the group, Nedelka said. The 70 year old was put on the surfboard and was brought back to shore, where he was met by an EMS crew and loaded into an ambulance.
The man was provided with advanced life support by EMS personnel and transported to a local hospital where he is listed in critical condition.
The incident is under investigation.
