VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - A new Virginia Beach ordinance prohibits people from standing or driving on roadway medians, in most cases.

If you violate the ordinance, you could face a fine of up to $1500, up to six months in jail, or both.

There are a few exceptions, for pedestrians crossing a street and for city workers on official duties. MPO Margie Long says a mechanical breakdown or emergency is another exception.

The city adopted the ordinance, Section 21-600, to the City Code on August 11.
