Local Pearl Harbor survivor dies

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Frank Adolph Chebetar, a survivor of the Pearl Harbor attack and president of the local Pearl Harbor Survivors Association , died surrounded by family on April 25.

 Chebetar, 90, was one of the last survivors of the Dec. 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.

He retired from the Navy in 1960 and retired from civil work in 1985.

A charter member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association Chapter 2, Chebetar served as the organization's president for many years.

He also brought joy to many children in Virginia Beach as Santa Claus in the Virginia Beach Public Library's Annual Candlelight Storytime.

Chebetar was proceeded in death by his wife of 61 years, Joan A. Chebetar. He is survived by the couple's two daughters, two sons, five grandchildren and great grandson.

A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. April 30, at the Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Virginia Beach.
