VIRGINIA BEACH. VA. (WAVY) - A Virginia Beach man is in custody after detectives say his 4-year-old son was accidentally shot in the hip Thursday afternoon.

Nicholas A. Pierce, 26, of the 3800 block of Buckhorn Place, was charged with felony child neglect, according to Virginia Beach police.

Pierce called 911 at 4:16 p.m. Thursday.

When police arrived, the child was taken to Norfolk General Hospital where he was immediately rushed into surgery.

The boy remains in critical condition at this time.

Police said the shooting was accidental, but they don't know who pulled the trigger. The weapon was a large caliber gun.

Neighbor Paige Lucas said, "He could have turned his back for a second and something went down."

Pierce is being held in the Virginia Beach Correctional Center without bond. A bond hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 14.
