VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - An 18-year-old man died Thursday afternoon when the vehicle he was riding in crashed into several trees on Shore Drive.

Jimmy Barnes with the Virginia Beach Police Department said the crash occurred around 1:15 p.m. in the 1400 block of Shore Drive near First Landing Park and involved one vehicle.

A preliminary investigation revealed the driver, Stephen B. Clark, Jr., 19, of Virginia Beach was traveling down Shore Drive at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his vehicle and went off the roadway, hitting several trees before coming to a rest back on the road, Barnes said.

The passenger, Gregory B. Welch, 18, was pronounced dead at the scene. Clark suffered non-life threatening injuries. Both were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash and both airbags deployed. Barnes said the vehicle suffered heavy damage to the passenger side and front end.

The investigation into the crash continues and any charges will be determined after speaking with the Commonwealth's Attorney.
