Woman killed in moped crash ID'd

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Virginia Beach Police say a woman riding a moped near Oceana was killed in an accident involving two cars Tuesday morning.

Jimmy Barnes with the Virginia Beach Police Department told WAVY.com the crash occurred in the 1300 block of London Bridge Road near Ships Corner Road around 11:30 a.m. Traci Lynne Fulgham, 46, of Virginia Beach was riding a moped northbound, crossing from Drakesmile Road to London Bridge Road in the right lane when she was struck by a 2009 Dodge Charger, traveling in the same direction.

The Charger struck by a 2004 KIA Optima traveling eastbound from Shipps Corner Road to London Bridge Road, forcing the Charger to rotate counterclockwise. Barnes said the Charger again struck the moped, causing Fulgham to go airborne onto the grassy area across the bike path. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Commuters in the area said they did not know the woman's name, but recognized her pink moped. Police say an initial investigation revealed one of the cars ran a red light and another car hit it, but are still trying to determine how the moped got involved.

Jeff English witnessed the accident.

"It definitely made me second guess myself behind the wheel," English said. "It's not just you on the road. Everybody needs to remember that."

The crash was cleared just before 5 p.m.  Tuesday.

There are no red lights at the intersection, and many motorists told 10 On Your Side it is the scene of an accident every couple months.
