VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - A Pit Bull was found dead outside of the Virginia Beach Animal Care and Adoption Center Monday morning.

According to Grazia Moyers with the Virginia Beach Police Department, a volunteer with the shelter found the dog in an outdoor play area at approximately 11 a.m.

Two employees with the shelter attempted CPR on the dog but were unable to save him. The dog was available for adoption.

Moyers said the dog was left outside since Sunday afternoon. She said police are launching a criminal investigation into the shelter's policies and procedures as well as an administrative investigation.

According to Wayne Gilbert with the shelter, employees usually do a walk-through to make sure animals are back in their cages throughout the day and before the shelter closes.

"We have launched an investigation to figure out what exactly happened. The police department is doing a complete investigation to look at our policies to see if there was any criminal activity so it can see where there may have been issues with what happened with this entire event," Gilbert said.
